When I write a science fiction novel like The monodreme the book turns out to be something other than science fiction. When I write a fantasy trilogy like The Master Changes the fantasy element turns into something else. When I write an 'experimental novel' like Plasti-cake it ends up not being anywhere near as weird or complicated as it seems.
